Service Learning

 

The Service Learning Programme at HOPAC has been designed and implemented to create opportunities that challenge students to serve Christ through:

  • Leadership
  • Serving each other
  • Serving the local and global community
  • Caring for the environment
 
The Programme has 6 building blocks in its philosophy:
 
  1. Biblical Basis for Service
  2. Linked to the Curriculum
  3. Creating Local and Global Awareness
  4. Developing Environmental Awareness and Conservation
  5. Focusing on Poor and Marginalized People
  6. Developing Student-Led Service Projects
 
In the Primary School students from Reception to Grade 5 take part in Service Learning as part of their Topic work.  These Topics cover a wide range of Geographical and Scientific subjects.  Students are encouraged to turn their classroom learning into service opportunities that will benefit others both within and outside of the campus.  The current Topics are:
  • Reception -- Endangered Animals and Toys
  • Grade 1 -- Helping in our Local and Literacy in the World
  • Grade 2 -- Air and Weather and Plants
  • Grade 3 -- Disabilities
  • Grade 4 -- The Water Cycle
  • Grade 5 -- The Earth
Secondary School students at HOPAC get a special class dedicated to Service Learning.  Students are prepared over a 6-8 week period to engage with community issues that surround the school.  The current topics are:
  • Grades 6-8 -- Fair Trade, Literacy, Health, and Environment
  • Grades 9, 10 -- Soil Conservation, Water Resources, and Recycling
  • Grade 11 -- Global Topics (Infectious Diseases, Technology Gap, Education)
  • Grade 12 -- Open projects solving global issues
